History of 3D Printing

Updated: Oct 28, 2017

You are reading this because you have a curious mind. 3D Printing technology was invented by a similarly curious mind named Chuck Hull, who named it Stereo-lithography when he patented the technology back in 1983. A few years later in 1989, S. Scott Crumb made a significant invention in the Additive Manufacturing technology naming it Fused Deposition Modeling, which is one of the most widely used technology in Additive Manufacturing more commonly known as 3D Printing technology now.

Before 2007, 3D Printing was an expensive technology to be applied in various sectors as it is today. A RepRap concept of open source, self replicating 3D Printers took on to a revolution which landed to where we are with this technology right now.

2009 saw the first commercially available 3D Printer in a kit format - DIY kind of thing. And then desktop DLP and Desktop SLA printers were launched via crowdfunding site like Kickstarter.

Based on success of the above mentioned desktop printers, a new wave of maker movement began by 2012 and since the new technologies, techniques and process in the field of 3D Printing have been invented each passing day along with newer and versatile mix of materials that can be used with these technologies.

Considered as the 'Third Industrial Revolution', 3D Printing has changed rapid manufacturing and production in many ways. 'Thirdinrev' was coined as in inspiration of this revolution since its impact on the industrial sector has been huge and it progresses to make advanced impacts on numerous other sectors.

3D Printing has come a long way from patented technology to an opensource one. Newer innovations will disrupt traditional manufacturing in a way unimaginable. Engineers and product developers have already started to realize its potential and are quickly adapting to additive manufacturing, Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Manufacturing for faster innovations and product launch to markets.
